Tenn. Volkswagen plant powers up solar park

KnoxNews -- German automaker Volkswagen on Wednesday flipped the on switch for a new solar park at its Tennessee assembly plant.

The 33-acre installation next to the Chattanooga plant has a capacity to produce more than 13 gigawatt hours of electricity per year. That's the equivalent of the amount of energy used by 1,200 area homes each year, according to Volkswagen.

"We are proud to power up the biggest solar park of any car manufacturer in North America today," Frank Fischer, the chairman and CEO of VW's Chattanooga operations, plant said in a release.

The new solar park will meet about 12.5% of the plant's electricity needs during full production, and will power all of its operations during off-peak periods. Volkswagen will consume all of the electricity produced by the park, unlike a more comm

Some people in this forum really need to get away from this idea that everything has to make short-term economic sense. Stop acting like corporate CEOs that can't see anything past the next fiscal quarter. The whole idea of investing in things like infrastructure is that there is a LONG-TERM benefit. If it were up to some people here, the Hoover Dam would never have been built. The rural West also would have never been electrified. Power companies would have never seen a return on their investment. Please look past your own narrow interests. The world is bigger than just you.

It's called "net-metering". You send surplus solar power out to the grid during peak hours when the demand is highest and then the powerplant supplies electricity to the auto plant at night when there's hardly any demand. This is why the electric utility encourages people to do their laundry and run their dishwashers late at night.
