Deputies say trio staged auto accident in Tampa

St. Petersburg Times -- Sheriff's deputies arrested three people who they say staged an auto crash on Sheldon Road on Friday night.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is reporting that Amauri Perez Delgado, 40, Zoraida Domitila Zayas Padilla, 41, and Frank Lopez Masso, 30, met before the crash to plan how they'd carry it out. About 10 p.m., they staged a crash at Sheldon Road and Hamilton Avenue, according to the Sheriff's Office.

They were planning to get money from their insurance companies by filing an insurance claim with an unknown pain management clinic, their arrest reports say.

They were charged with participation in a staged crash and taken to the Orient Road Jail. Bail was set at $7,500 each.

The arrests come amid news that the number of staged auto crashes appears to be increasing.

They were probably stupid enough not to use a Japanese car.

It's common knowledge (at least in Michigan) that Japanese cars are junk.

Not happy to hear that 20% of my auto insurance premium goes to pay fraud. The people who stage such accidents probably think that they are only hurting the large insurance companies. However, the costs are simply passed along to those of us who buy auto insurance and don't engage in fraud.

Staged automobile accidents cost us more money for insurance and sometimes people's lives.

They're complaining in the Houston MSM (mainstream media... not the MSM that gets you disqualified from blood and tissue donation) that a lot of Hispanics don't do the census.

Not all insurance companies require a SSAN.

When I recently changed companies, I gave them my SSAN and then everything popped up ("you had a comprehensive claim last April and that's it"). I got tired of AIG Centennial Insurance raising rates and so I went back to State Farm.

And, if you can't qualify for a SSAN, you can get an ITIN. Credit checks can be run on an ITIN.

And they probably made the mistake of not using a Toyota.

Yup - FordMexico - I, too, expected the Car(s) to be Toyotas.

Wait though - that scam is coming for sure.

Organized crime at its best and it is everywhere especially among illegal immigrants who get paid for participating.

It is shameful so many Doctors and Lawyers are ripping consumers off by being part of it for $$$.

How did this conversation go? Probably thought up at a local Bar the night before. In my mind's eye, I hear "Cheech and Chong" figuring out the best way to do this.

They were going to do it right then, Thursday night, but figured that their Blood/Alcohol level might have unintended consequences on their plan, so they waited until Friday night. "Frank, you're the youngest and the healthiest, so we're going to smash into you. We'll come flying down Hamilton Avenue at about 60 miles an hour, so be stopped right on the corner, ok man? And don't worry. Just put your seat belt on. And try to relax your muscles, because a lot of injuries occur because people 'tense up'. Don't worry, man. I'll put the brakes on just before I hit you, so it will be 'reverse energy' and you won't feel anything. And you can use my St. Christopher metal.

When so many people are under or unemployed, such schemes will be in ascendancy - sort of the poor man's answer to executive bonuses.

I agree with Jarod13's post "I won't be a bit surprised if all of a sudden there's a rash of auto accidents that claims to be related to Toyota's recall problems"

When I first saw the headline I expected the vehicle to be a Toyota.

Think about your post Blue Cruzer "I wonder if these people are citizens or illegals?"

First, You are assuming any not having an Anglo-Saxon name must be a non-citizen or illegal - NOT TRUE as already pointed out to you.

Second, Most illegals do everything they can to avoid deliberate contact with law enforcement. Not much common sense if you think otherwise.

Finally, Most illegals do not have SSAN's that are required by insurance companies to obtain coverage (and they do check them cause they run credit bureaus to determine risk). Since the fraud requires insurance coverage this would rule out most if not all illegals from the scam.

The answer, these individuals were most likely citizens or individuals with a legal right to be in the USA with a capability to obtain drivers licenses and auto insurance.

We are getting further and further from our original goal of having stories with at least some connection to autos, fuel, oil, etc.
Come on, this is a stupid crime story, it should be given no credence, and should be in off topic, not in the news forum.
For shame!

Happened in central Texas not long ago. A guy faked his own death complete with a body from a cemetery - crash and fire late night, remote area, etc.

Cops didn't buy. The fire covered a lot of evidence but skid marks, car damage, and other things "just didn't look right". Hottest part of the fire was the driver seat. DNA didn't check out. Wife got a new boyfriend a little too soon - turned out to be the dead guy with insurance, of course.

He was a felon wanting to clear his record with a new identity. Got one too - a six digit TDCJ number. So did she.

I agree, not much to do with gasoline prices but might affect insurance rates.

Good way to make money. This due to the fact that there is no investigation done for these incidents. Much easier to pay the bills. Why try to do something that would save money for the people and prosecute the criminal element.

Several people have questioned whether these are illegals or not. There are a lot of people with either Hispanic names or names that sound Hispanic who are third, fourth, and even fifth or higher generations of Americans. Don't go around pasting labels on these people that probably don't belong to them. We have lots of Puerto Ricans who have Hispanic names as well and they are practically American citizens except for the fact that they don't want to join the U.S.A. because we have high taxes etc. Masso up there is an Italian surname despite the Lopez in the middle which might be Mama's maiden name. What they are is crooks by any other name. If we weren't in such bad shape jobwise people would not think up schemes like this to get money.

I won't be a bit surprised if all of a sudden there's a rash of auto accidents that claims to be related to Toyota's recall problems. There's already some suspicions surrounding the San Diego highway incident that the driver claims was related to Toyota's acceleration problems. Now the state of California is getting into the act claiming that Toyota sold vehicles in the state that they new had problems. All kinds of scams are going to come out of the wood work in order to make an easy buck -- or should I say millions or even billions when all is said and done.
