All city bus's are required to run Nat gas now. Even tho they have issues filling the tank completely depending on weather temp!

The problem, in part, is the regulations and associated cost of certifying the conversion of existing vehicles to run on NG.
I had (way back when ---> 40+ years) VW that I had converted (gas was cheap NG was cheaper not to mention I had a source that was free so to a poor engineering student the logic was great)
No problem as I collected a bunch of military surplus and did the deal in a long weekend.
Now comes today -- that should be no problem for a stepper. I could find no more military surplus so had to buy the hardware. Still not too bad as I could DIY for around $1500.00 The ROI at todays prices is < 9 months.
Opps I looked into the requirements for a CNG station at the house. Hardware cost was ok around $1200.00 DIY install is a good weekend to do it so it would pass the wife certification test.
Then I checked on the local zoning. I found I could install the station with a permit inspection and other requirement cost to run me another $5K which did not include the cost of an insurance rider on my homeowners insurance. Not cheap.
The kicker I can install the exact same equipment to supply an emergency electrical generator for around $100 (total) in permitting and inspection fees (there is no mention of insurance and my insurance agent checked and there is no requirement of a rider)
Need I mention that NG burns cleaner than any other fuel short of H2 yet to satisfy the government I need to spend big bucks for certification testing that I'm not screwing up the EPA ratings of the engine.

carranco: that's great. Hopefully fleet vehicles will move to NG soon as it would reduce tranportation costs and with it, the cost of living.

Problem is with falling prices there is low incentive for gas companies to continue production at current levels, so just as we start to get infrastructure to use our surplus the supply will be dwindling.

Want to drive a natural gas powered car now? Charge a plug in hybrid from a utility that generates electricity with natural gas.

CNG works for urban fleets and possibly urban individuals. Not so good if you drive around the country.

Putting a CNG refueling infrastructure in place nationwide there would be plenty of CNG vehicles on the road, and the price of the vehicles would drop. There is an old saying:"BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME".

A lot of stations need to be built for this product plus a lot of vehicles need a conversion kit on them, but at what cost?
